August Colourist of the Month
Lauren Fischer - Vogue National Hair Design QLD

By Rob Kotevski August 3 2009

Japanese popular culture and fashion have been major influences on the Western world in recent times. Shades of Japan have been apparent throughout all areas of the Western media, including cinema, fashion, art and music. Of course, the Land of the Rising Sun’s influence runs much deeper than sushi, Pokemon and karaoke.

A recent exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney displayed the best work of Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. Featuring a vast array of her work in different media, including sculpture, paint and video, Kusama’s love of bold, primary colours and the use of repetition had many comparing her to pop artist Andy Warhol.

Some of the world’s most prolific high fashion designers also come from Japanese backgrounds. Issey Miyake has become a household name. If you haven’t heard of Rei Kawakubo, you probably have heard of her label: Comme des Garcons. Gwen Stefani helped to drive the popularity of Japanese street fashion with her love of Harajuku Girls apparent in her stage shows and music videos.

It is the country that has spawned all these pop cultural and fashion phenomena that Lauren Fischer has at the top of her must-see destination list.

“They’ve definitely got an interesting culture and interesting fashion,” Lauren says, of Japan. “I’m interested in unusual, dominant styles.”

The colourist, who works in Queensland’s Vogue National Hair Design, was announced as a finalist in the Redken Future Colour Competition. The contest was the first Lauren has ever entered and she couldn’t quite believe her name had been announced as a nominee.

“I didn’t expect anything, so I was stoked,” she tells myhairdressersearch. “I was overwhelmed!”

The winner of Redken Future Colour 2009 will be announced later this month.

Coming from a line of hair stylists, Lauren’s mother and grandmother were both hairdressers. Being surrounded by hair stylists from such a young age made an impact on her, and her passion for her work is evident through her involvement in industry events.

Lauren worked backstage at the Redken Mastery in Motion tour, held earlier this year. The pace of shows backstage can be frantic, with models, stylists and organisers running around in the midst of hair spray and hair dryers. Redken Mastery in Motion was no different. Lauren rose to the challenge and even believes something can be gained from working in such a high pressure environment.

“I think working under pressure is good for the challenge,” she says.

Along with the influence of two older generations in the industry – “That was a bit of inspiration there” – another influence in Lauren’s work is high fashion from the European runways.

“We do have a lot of international Vogues in the salon,” she says.

With such an impressive portfolio already under her name, it will only be a matter of time before Lauren’s work is seen side-by-side with the greats of the international fashion and beauty scenes.
