Timothy Stone - People Hair - Potts Point NSW

“Socialist come hairdresser; whoever would have thought!”

Not unlike his new employer Hamish Glianos at People, Timothy Stone started his life in hairdressing by coincidence.

Timothy spent his youth dreaming of big cities and, like most American children, becoming a famous movie star or rock legend. Growing into himself, and into the realization that fame was harder to achieve than initially thought, Timothy settled on a slightly more secure career and at the age of 19, enrolled as a Sociology and International Relations student at the University of Minnesota, where his dreams turned to more humanitarian work.

Well-read and geared up to complete his third year compulsory language credit for his course, Timothy traveled, one-way, to Germany to study the language for a couple of months. It didn’t take long for all his plans to change and within weeks the voice of personal evolution in his head was advising a new path. It was here that Timothy decided on a more creative vocation.

“It seemed that everyone I met in Hamburg had some sort of affiliation with the fashion industry. My partner at the time was a fashion stylist, and I thought, ‘That can’t be too hard’, so I decided to pursue a freelance career in hair styling, which was quite a change from my studies in international relations. Those studies have certainly still come in handy along the way though, and I hope that my care for people still shines through.”

The combined traits of spontaneity and confidence usually have alarms bells ringing, but with Timothy, fate clearly played a part. Undiscovered talent shone through and with a little help from his friends, Timothy’s new path was laid.

“My best friend and flatmate was a hair and make-up artist and so it was fairly easy to get onto shoots. There is always someone at a shoot that no one contracted to be there, so it was pretty easy to blend in as the overly keen assistant! After a while my Sociology degree back in America was forgotten about, and I was shooting full time. Before I knew it I was working on publications from all over Europe and being represented by one of Germany’s best agencies, Bigoudi, despite having no formal education in anything fashion related.”

After ‘pretending’ for some while, Timothy decided to take his new found love to the next level and to Australia, after a short return to Minneapolis, to enrol in a hairdressing course and gain all the skills required to become a recognised hairdresser. His career was every bit as fast-tracked as his education and Timothy soon went on to work as a national educator, freelance editorial stylists and manage a high-profile salon in Paddington, Sydney.

Now a decade on, Timothy is the new Artistic Director at People Hairdressing.
