So if you haven’t seen his salon before, it’s refreshing to find it housed in two old terrace houses amid the winding streets of Sydney’s Surry Hills. Packed with unique design, orange cushions nestle by pink lamps, 60s-style design complements red flooring, and personal, individual rooms surprise.
As this story goes live, news is in that Ngata is set to open a second Sydney salon. All the better, then, to hear about the original one, writes Victoria Lea.
In a nutshell, how would you describe your salon?
It’s quite an intimate, boutique salon environment - we really shied away from that 'product line' mentality. We’re set in two houses that have a lot of room so the feel is quite intimate and, even though it may be quite busy, the feel is indulgence, personal attention and service.
How did your salon start out?
I started on my own, with one chair and one mirror. It was just in a terrace house and I liked that feel of a cool funky apartment. As the salon grew the idea grew and we extended. A few years later the terrace house next door became available and we combined the two to what we have today.
Tell us a bit about the furniture…
It’s old and new. Do you know Space Furniture? It’s an Italian showroom that sources the best furniture in the world, from all over the world. I buy pieces from there and team them with things I’ve found. Like amazing late ’70s pieces (I have a fixation with lighting) and just everything I love.
I wanted the salon to feel like an apartment, a house, a home. So there are some pieces from the ’70s, like the Parker furniture which is very minimal and very linear. But overall it’s this eclectic mix – that’s what I wanted and I think that’s what makes it like a house.
