Word has it stylist George Giavis does the best blonde in town and it seems word of his expertise travels far. He was recently summoned to Los Angeles, where he tended to Australian actress Melissa George’s locks for the Golden Globes Awards. Dubbed the “Emperor of Blonde”, his passion for gorgeous, golden locks is clear.
“I’ve often said that being blonde is like being on drugs: it’s expensive and addictive,” he laughs.
And while he is happy to indulge his blonde clientele’s addiction for shades from pure platinum to honey hues, he stresses that brunettes and redheads should not feel left out.
“I’ll work one-on-one with every client to ensure that every client feels special,” he says.
So special, in fact, that when visiting Giavis for a colour, each client is seated in their own opulent room decorated with chandeliers, ornate mirrors and exquisite antiques.
“You should feel pampered,” he says. “It’s all part of the experience.”
How did you enjoy the Hollywood experience?
There is no better time to be in LA than award season - there is a real buzz and you can do some serious celebrity spotting. I have lots of friends in the hair and beauty industry who were all there to ‘do’ people. Its great to catch up with them, hear all the gossip. We usually get together to watch the show on TV after all the hard work has been done and that's a hoot.
Which celebrity would you like to get your hands on?
At the moment, Kate Winslet. She has some serious regrowth that needs to addressed. I couldn't believe when I saw it at the Globes. She needs my help prior to the Academy Awards.
Do you have a favourite blonde?
My classic blondes are Marilyn Monroe, Brigitte Bardot and Grace Kelly. My favourite blondes of today are Katherine Heigl, Kate Moss and Cameron Diaz.
What about the best brunettes and redheads?
Angelina Jolie has no competition, she is the ultimate brunette. As for redheads, actress Amy Adams is looking great.
What inspires you?
My clients inspire me because they demand the best. I also have close friendships with a few leading designers and that really helps. I work on their shows. It’s great to be at the cutting edge of fashion.
What keeps you motivated?
You are only as good as your last colour or cut.
What advice do you have for young colourists who would like to follow in your footsteps?
Work hard. Perfect your craft. Truly believe that colour is not a poor cousin in a salon. Cut and colour is like a marriage and in my experience, clients are very loyal to their colourists. Regard your work as an art form and I believe in yourself as an artist. The rest will come if you are good at what you do.
What colouring techniques will you be using this season?
I like the free-hand, paint-on Baliage technique. Also low lights, highlights, anything that can ensure an individualised look. I am working on some new techniques from the US that are very exciting, so watch this space.
