February Hairdresser of the Month
Sheree Amy George, Hemisphere for Hair, WA

By Rob Kotevski February 2 2009

The relationship between hairdresser and client is almost holy. Many clients are fiercely loyal to their stylists, remaining a faithful devotee for years.

In an increasingly isolated and time-poor world, there are few relationships that still exist where the bond is as strong as that between stylist and client. Clients remain regular patrons of their favourite stylist in salons to exchange gossip and have a good chat to their hairdresser, who almost can become a pseudo-counsellor.

“We get that every day,” Sheree Amy George says, currently working at Western Australia’s Hemisphere for Hair.

While having a deep and meaningful conversation with every client that walks through the door - and that task can be problematic, due to time or other constraints - can be draining for some, Sheree enjoys building rapport with her clients and talking to them about whatever may be on their minds.

“I like talking to people about that,” she tells myhairdressersearch.

Sheree believes customer service skills are a vital part of a hairdresser’s role.

Not only does Sheree have the listening skills required for her job, but her awards are proof that Hemisphere for Hair hosts some serious hairdressing talent. She has won the L’Oreal Style & Shoot Award for two consecutive years and she believes she thrives in a spirited environment.

“I love the competition side of it,” Sheree says.

Face-to-face contact in the salon is also something Sheree loves. With hairdressing definitely not being a dull, 9 to 5 life, she enjoys doing something different and making people feel good about themselves.

Sheree says that a good hairdresser must constantly strive to learn and develop as a stylist and make the time to gain new skills. A one-way ticket to job dissatisfaction would be to give every client the same cut and colour.

“How boring would that be?” Sheree asks.

Training and development is something Sheree knows a little bit about. She recently trained 12 other stylists in new colouring techniques. Even though some of the stylists were older and had been in the industry for a while longer, Sheree received extremely positive feedback from the more experienced stylists who took part in the training program.

“Thinking outside the square” should be  a mandatory part of a hairdresser’s state of mind. In an industry full of passionate and vibrant team players, there’s no doubt one can constantly think of new ideas and keep things interesting.

“There’s nothing worse than a dull hairdresser,” Sheree says.
