How exactly do you know if you’ve landed your dream job?

“If you wake up each morning and look forward to going to work, you pretty much know you’ve chosen the exact career you should be pursuing,” says 22-year-old Ashley South, from Fox Hair and Brows in Broadbeach, Queensland.

And that, indeed she does.

”I was born a hairdresser,” laughs the bubbly third year apprentice, who has been employed with the busy Gold Coast salon for almost three years. “I’ve been experimenting with my own hair since I was old enough to hold scissors!”

With hairdressing the only thing on her mind, Ashley was determined to work at Fox Hair and Brows straight off the bat.

“It’s such a beautiful environment, with a well know reputation and a great team of staff,” she says of the bustling salon, famed as much for its up-to-the-minute hairdressing as it is its Hollywood-style brow shaping treatments.

“I’ve learned so much here,” enthuses the all-rounder, who not only cuts, colours and styles client’s hair, she shapes and re-creates their brows using the Anastasia technique from Los Angeles.

“I’ve learned especially that [as an apprentice], you should absorb everyone’s advice, because at the end of the day you will draw from all of it and find out what is best for you. Stick it out – the important people will eventually notice you and all of your hard work pays off in the end.”

While happily ensconced as part of the “Fox Family” for now, Ashley has her sights set high for her hairdressing future.

”The possibilities in this job are endless,” she says, smiling broadly. “I worked on Mercedes Benz Fashion Festival Brisbane 2008 and I would really love to do more runway work as well as editorial with models. I had so much fun at the Fashion Festival and I learned so much.”

“There are many places I would love my trade to take me,” says Ashley. “Working overseas is a dream, and one day, having the opportunity of owning my own salon.”

With goals firmly in place, Ashley is determined to reach them and make an indelible impression on the world of hairdressing, no matter what!

“I love my job,” she says, “so the journey will be thoroughly enjoyable.”

As for her destination, we’re fairly certain wherever Ashley lands it will be paved with success.
