Alexandra Kontos – Nischler TAS

Young hair stylist Alexandra Kontos took home the top honour of Apprentice of the Year at the recent Hair Expo Awards.

Held on the third and final evening of Hair Expo, the awards evening is considered by many to be the peak of industry recognition for the hairdressing world.

Goldwell salon apprentice Alexandra began working at Tasmanian salon Nischler in 2005. Her guide and mentor over the past four years has been Matthew Nischler who was a finalist in the Australian Hairdresser of the Year category.

Alexandra’s award-winning collection gave her an opportunity to present her hairdressing skills and ideas to the industry with her four years of experience behind her.

myhairdressersearch spoke to the award winner about her collection and plans for the future.

How did it feel when your name was announced?

Overwhelmed and shocked! I know it’s a cliche but I really didn’t think I was going to win!

Do you enjoy doing session/editorial work or do you prefer working in the salon?

I would have to say both at the moment. I have just had my first real taste of session work, with a shoot with Shane Henning that will be featured in Culture magazine’s next edition. I enjoy the variety of both.

Why did you decide to pick a career in hair?

To be honest, I was fortunate enough to achieve on an academic and artistic level at school, but it was always going to be hairdressing for me. It fullfills me on both levels.

If you could give any celeb a makeover, who would it be and why?

Probably Kiera Knigtley, due to her great bone structure and elphin-like features. I think her hair is to fine to be kept long and doesn’t do her justice! A nice short crop or something quite clean and sharp and bob like.

What's the next step for you? Do you see yourself working in a salon or would you like to move towards magazines and fashion shows?

I’m going on holidays to Greece to see my family. When I get back I’ll start planning my next shoot and competition work. As far as magazines and fashion shows are concerned, I’d love to be involved and will pursue this area in the near future!
