July Colourist of the Month
Jacen Ward
Hair Expo Colour Technician of the Year
Toni&Guy Paddington

By Rob Kotevski July 2 2009

Considered by many to be the ‘Oscars’ of the hairdressing world, the Hair Expo Awards are the highest honour that can be bestowed on a stylist or colour technician.

Capping off the Hair Expo long weekend, hot hairdressing talent is recognised from right across the country at the longest running industry award evening in the Southern Hemisphere.

Jacen Ward, from Toni&Guy Paddington, took home the honour of the prestigious Colour Technician of the Year Award.

The colour technician from Sydney was recognised for his dedication, exemplary work ethic and his dynamic and brilliant use of colour in his winning collection. His work is an inspiration, not only for his peers in the industry, but for many rising stars throughout Australia.

Ward took five minutes out of his hectic work schedule to speak to myhairdressersearch.

How did it feel when your name was announced?

I was overwhelmed, it was a big weekend for Toni&Guy and me with shows and seminars and this was the icing on the cake for us.

Can you share some of the secrets of your award-winning success?

With this collection, it was all about telling a strong high fashion story, the colour was all about blondes brunette and red heads. Being fortunate to work with a colour house such as Wella Professional allows me to create such crisp vibrant tones.

Let's go back to the start. Why did you decide to pick a career in hair?

Back then, it was all about getting out of school and I thought that hairdressing was an easy option, how wrong I was! I was just lucky that I fell in love with it. The decision to specialise in colour was due to the fact that technical work came more naturally to me, at the time I was surrounded by some amazing colourists!

What is your advice to clients that are going grey?

I think with white hair there are lots of different options and it shouldn’t just be about block colour. I think it is better to blend white hair than try and hide it!
