November Colourist of the Month

Damien Rinaldo, Creative Director, Hair Machine SA

By Shonagh Walker November 3 2008

With a list of accolades longer than Jessica Simpson’s hair extensions, South Australia-based Damien Rinaldo has his artistic hands full. He’s Creative Director of six salons in both South Australia and Victoria, senior colourist of Hair Machine Norwood and the man who ensures the smooth running of the brand that is Hair Machine.

myhairdressersearch speaks to him about his success and his colourful vision for the future.

Why hairdressing?

It’s in my genes. My father, uncle and aunt are all barbers. I spent my school holidays in Dad’s salon. It soon became clear to me that I wanted to leave school and I took the first job that came along in my uncle’s salon. It was the best decision of my life. I worked with my uncle for seven years, before opening my own salon in partnership with him. We’ve been building Hair Machine for ten years.

You are so passionate about colour…

I love the creative scope it brings. Colour works magic, giving clients a whole new appearance without the need for a radical cut.

What’s most important – the cut or colour?

Both are critical elements. In skilled hands, they can be used to create the perfect style for each individual client. A good colour should always compliment the strengths of the cut.

What are the hottest techniques for 2009?

Balliage is making a huge comeback. Colours are natural and subtle.  It’s not about how loudly your colour screams, but how well it compliments your total image.

What is most essential to any hair hue?

Confidence in maintenance. Even a colour that looks terrific at week one will look jaded after six months. It’s vital to choose a colour requiring minimum up-keep.

How can clients ensure colour longevity between salon visits?

Always use professional products, prescribed by your hairdresser and appropriate to your colour choice.

What are the golden rules of colour?

Colour is a journey of discovery for both hairdresser and client. It’s a process that shouldn’t be rushed. Working together can bring amazing results.
