NZ Hairdresser of the Year
Hair Expo 2009

How did you get your start in hairdressing?

I was living in a flat with my two older bothers and they decided that I needed to get off the couch (where I was spending most of my time) and get a job, so they got me an interview at the top hair salon in Invercargill. I always thought hairdressers were cool people and was excited that I might get a job where I could keep my long mullet.

How would you rate the new apprentices coming into the industry right now?

I see some really advanced technical skill coming through, but in the same breath there's another hundred or so wannabes that are searching out a career that is not them. I think being intuitively creative is something that you’re born with. A lot fall off the bus because they underestimate how tough it is mentally and physically.

What qualities do NZ hairdressers have that sets them apart?

Because of our geographical position on this planet we are able to look into the fashion bubble without actually being trapped in it. There is always a sense of small town pride with big city attitude. Kiwi hairdressers don't like to be over looked and feel a need to make their mark!

What do you find most exciting about hairdressing?

Living with a passion for a craft that gives me so much pleasure making others look and feel fantastic.

Which celebrity do you think has the best hair?

I still love Rihanas sexy boy/girl flip over (hot!)

What trends do you think will be big for summer 09/10?

Short is the new long. Explosions of pastel highlights from peach and pinks through to baby blues and greens. Hair is worn freely and loose for no fuss femininity.
