Kate Clark, Salon Ink
By Lis Szepsy September 1 2009
Salon Ink's unique philosophy seems contagious. Their purist formula of family, focus on education and singular quest for beautification of the client continues to drive Kate Clark. Recently becoming the first Australian to be chosen as one of the creative team on the Guillaume Foundation, Kate tells us what's hot for her in the hair world.
Tell us about the Guillaume Foundation
While I've won many awards in the past, my inclusion in the Guillaume Foundation is the most significant achievement for me. It's a foundation that was set up to celebrate the work of an artist who was also a sculptor, who inspired the work of hair greats like Vidal Sassoon.
The foundation was set up to assist young hairdressers internationally. Each year, there's an intake of new stylists. They are given a theme and are helped by us to develop it as a concept. Then we put on a show to exhibit their work. I'm one of 12 or 13 instructors from all over the world. We're trying to push them, to try to get them to think outside the box.
What's modern for you in hair?
If I had to name one look, I'd say Agyness Deyn. My cutting style is more like 'sculpting'. I like the bob, and cropped looks too.
What's your trademark?
I'm very strong on encouraging people to embrace their individuality. It's important that the client can manage their own style well and that it's low maintenance. I like to show them a few different looks that they can use and teach them some quick and easy 'take home tricks'.
Which products are you really into at the moment?
I like L'Oreal's Pearl Whip for curls and dry scrunching and Kerastase Creme Nutri Sculpt as a leave in conditioner or for a great finish dry look blow dry, with just a touch of hold and some hydration.
Who is your greatest mentor?
My mum, Wendy Gunn. She has tireless energy, can bring the best out in everyone and she has an ongoing hunger for learning and evolving.
