New research and a rash of company announcements about job opportunties has provided some relief to the constant wave of redundancies washing over Australia.
Both the Clarius Group and Link Recuritment have just released research showing which sectors are seeing job growth in the same week as several big name Australian employers have announced they have thousands of new jobs to fill.
According to the latest Clarius Index Survey, chefs, hairdressers, builders and health professionals continue to be in demand despite the economic down turn.
The Clarius Index December quarterly results revealed there were 60,000 unfilled skilled positions across construction, automotive trades and metalworkers and 39,000 across building & engineering, accounting, auditing, healthcare and computing.
LINK recruitment’s research reveals that despite a “significant slowdown in professional job growth over the next 12 months” some states have more “opportunities” than others.
“Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory still have some positive job-prospects,” said Danny Busija of LINK recruitment.
“There are good infrastructure projects running in rail gas, roads and other pipeline projects. Victoria remains steady but NSW and South Australia seem to be in decline,” Mr Busija said.
On the down side, the Clarius Index projected there could be 35,000 to 50,000 skilled roles out in the cold by 2010.
According to Kim Quick, executive general officer of the Clarius Group, the December survey revealed jobs in marketing, advertising, science, research and tourism as well as low-skilled occupations such as manufacturing and manual labour were in decline.
“Our expectations of the coming months are that companies will focus on core functions as economic conditions continue to tighten up,” said Ms Quick.
