| The Shag
Forty years ago The Beatles helped inspire a social revolution. There was the music, the rock appeal, the hope, the hysteria, the clothes. And then there was the hair.
Starting with early sixties snappy bowl cuts, by the end of the decade The Beatles were all about the shag: long, shaggy fringes over the face that screamed style, nonchalance and attitude in equal parts.
Today, Generation Y have taken over the look and made it, not only their own, but probably the It look of the year. Now I know that every face, hair texture and length tells its own story, but here's my three steps to the ultimate Gen Y shag...
Step 1. WASH & CUT Wash well, and keep the cut simple, tapered around the ears and at the back. Focus on the fringe… you need lots of depth, weight and texture here so don’t be too scissor-happy but keep it nice and long at the front, texturising with scissors to help brake up the shape and allow the product to achieve that messy look. This is a top and front-heavy style so work with what lengths you already have and don’t cut away too much.
Step 2. BLOW-DRY & STYLE Blow-dry without a nozzle, backwards and forwards, using your hands to add depth – it doesn’t need to be bone dry, you don’t want to create a flat look. Use a cream-based styling product to give the hair that dishevelled, textured style.
Step 3. MAINTENANCE To maintain this look, clients need to keep the edges clean on a regular basis, i.e. a cut every five weeks. They should take home a cream-based styling product and use it daily so the shape keeps its feathered, but sharp and crisp, look.
