Hair tips for men

By Rob Kotevski April 29 2009

Pick a trend. Any trend. The latest looks from any given season can be a minefield. You want to be aware of what is going on in the worlds of fashion and grooming but you don’t want to become a slave to trends and end up looking like you’re trying too hard.

To help negotiate the way through this season’s best hair for men, myhairdressersearch enlisted the help of E Salon’s Style and Training Director Marc Mendicino, who won the highly coveted Men’s Hairdresser of the Year at the 2009 Australian Hair Fashion Awards.

Displaced, the winning collection Marc submitted to the judges, is cited by the training director as his biggest achievement and highlight of his career to date.

  High Flyer

A businessman with an edge, this high flyer encapsulates a displaced feel that begins with his tie that is always done but not with the traditional knot. He’s clean-shaven, and his hair is always neatly presented - left side part and lots of product - whether wearing a suit or jeans. The cut is tapered into the nape and perimeter with length maintained internally.

  London Calling

A certain coldness reflected in the stare and buttoned up jacket creates the poster boy for displacement, with a ‘London’ air. The hair, clothes, even the way he is standing lends itself to capturing the essence of the shoot. The hair is slightly tapered through the back with softness maintained at the nape. Length is maintained internally and through the sides. The fringe is worked square, and there is texture throughout the haircut to bring out the natural movement.

  Square

Wanted to keep everything square and strong with this look. Wanted to accentuate the model’s strong jaw line. Working the short, straight fringe created an almost box like shape with the face. The cut is short but not over-texturised, again to maintain a strong shape.
  Rocker

Cool, calm and collected this rock ‘n’ roller likes his hair done, but doesn’t want it to look done. An important aspect of this cut is the length - it’s maintained throughout with a slight taper through the back and it is not over-texturised. The fringe is to the side, but there is a slightly rounded shape through the front perimeter.

  Dean

With the hair high and off the face, the look channels 'James Dean’ in the 1950's, and features a combination of really tight scissor-over-comb through the sides and nape with a disconnected, exaggerated length internally. Internally hair gradually increases in length as it moves from the crown to the fringe area.

  Beaty

Inspired by the biggest band of all time 'The Beatles' , this is the modern-day take on the 1960's 'Shag' hairstyle. Weight is removed from the perimeter, allowing the hair to sit slightly flatter. The perimeter is then edged off with a clean rounded line. Hair is styled straight and slightly under, but then messed up with product to add texture.

Marc took five minutes out from his busy schedule to have a chat with myhairdressersearch.

How did it feel when your name was announced as Men’s Hairdresser of the Year?

My heart was pounding as the announcers were reading out the four finalists, but when they announced the winner and my name was read out, I was truly shocked.  I turned to my girlfriend in disbelief, gave her a kiss and just remember the entire salon going crazy.  This was my first major collection so I really didn't expect to win; I was happy just to be named as a finalist. It's a very humbling experience to be recognized for your work in such a major way.

What looks will be popular for men heading into winter 2009?

This winter I think men will still maintain a variation in length - both short and long. When I say long I'm not talking shoulder length; it will be more over the ears and layered with a strong square shape. The squareness will help keep it masculine. I think there will still be texture but not so much that you lose the shape of the cut.

Fringes seem to be getting longer as there was a bit of a trend there for a while where a lot of guys were opting to take the fringe area quite short. Combining the long fringe and even extra length internally with a really tight barbered finish through the back, sides and edges can also look quite cool.

So whether your style is short or long try and maintain a strong square shape which isn't over-texturised, but most importantly, masculine.

What three men's hair care products should every guy have in his cupboard?

1. L’oreal Professionnel HOMME Tonique Revitalizing Shampoo: This is a strengthening shampoo ideal to use on a daily basis with a very masculine and fresh scent.

2. L’oreal Professionnel HOMME Definition Wax: This is for medium to thick hair. It's a flexible hold which allows hair to maintain its natural movement.

3. L’oreal Professionnel HOMME Sculpting Fibre Wax: This again gives a flexible hold but slightly stronger than the Definition Wax. It allows you to mould the†hair for a more deconstructed look.
