Fruits of the garden

On the next level again, the head formed a base for buns, bobbles and bands of every type. At Easton Pearson, Renya Xydis incorporated all manner of fruit and vegetation to give shots of colour and flavour. From the perfectly simple crown came narrow twisted bands with cones of hair behind, and fringes of berries and leaves at the front. Darren Borthwick for Redken cleverly garnished a high-set bun with a colourful riot of giant flowers giving finish to Akira's funked-up orientalism.

High drama

Mad Cortes and Romance was Born made the most dramatic moves with overgrown balls, braids and pom poms. At Mad Cortes, Jayne Wild had models looking like crazy housewives, with grown-up clothes topped with clusters of gelato coloured orbs. At Romance was Born, Lores Giglio had all of the above; headbands, pom poms, head-dresses - a genuine globetrotter's guide to ethnic bits and bobs on beautiful heads bursting with eye candy, showing pure hair artistry.

At Wayne Cooper, the hair direction by Clive Alright was sans decoration but had great modern moments with spherical rolls sitting at the front of the head or over the top of strikingly blunt fringes; call it 60s quiff meets 80s punk.

Loose and lovely

For the handful of designers that opted for loose hair, the focus was still around the face. Stylist Michael Brennon for L’Oréal Professionnel at Cohen et Sabine used pearls to line the centre part, with twisted braids either side of the head pulling hair back from the face to free-fall into light and airy texture at the ends. At Alex Perry, stylist Sophie Roberts for GHD created the most grown up and graceful look of the season, with hair slicked to the head wet, then cascading down one shoulder ending in Greta Garbo-esque waves.
