Fantastic elastic
Been wondering how the stylists create those perfect sleek heads that have littered the runways for seasons? Two words: hat elastic.
Words: Elisabeth Creagh May 26 2008

Available from fabric stores like Spotlight and Lincraft, hat elastics work so well because tying the hair back with them keeps a pony tail super taut and even gives a mini 'face lift'. Gotta love that.

Stylist Kenneth Stoddart recommends wrapping a hat elastic around a pony tail a couple of times, then tying it into a double knot. He says it gives a better finish and that the experts have been using this little gem here and overseas for years.

For the whole look, lacquer the hair with gel, putting the product in from the hair line to the ears, making sure to include the fringe and any strays. Then comb back or brush with a good brush, like a Mason and Pearson.

Don't worry about the nape of the neck or behind the ears, the important foundation is at the top of the head. From here, most of the season's great looks spring, from simple pony tails to great quirky buns and headbands.

Check out a couple of Stoddart's favourite looks from the runways of Louis Vuitton and Balenciaga or, closer to home and shown here, his perfect minimalism for Lisa Ho.
