Rosemount Sydney Fashion Festival
By Rob Kotevski October 1 2008

The Rosemount Sydney Fashion Festival showcased what we’ll be wearing for Spring/Summer 2008/09.

Featuring designs from the likes of Alex Perry, Charlie Brown, Kirrily Johnston, Nicola Finetti and Lisa Ho, the festival presented the latest in hair and fashion during the course of the week.

The next big thing in hair was, quite literally, big hair. Voluminous hair was crimped and textured, leading the way for hair that hung down as well as locks that went up, up and away. Hair full of volume was seen at Nicola Finetti, Wayne Cooper and Jayson Brunsdon.

Also featuring as a key trend was a touch of nostalgia seen throughout the festival, with dos that harked back to the good old days. New life was breathed into bee-hive structures as they were brought into the 21st century contrasted with new-age textures and shapes.

myhairdressersearch presents an all-you-need-to-know guide to the best hair from the festival, with quick tips and advice so you can whip up great hair at home.

Relaxed elegance

5th Amendment

Gorman

Naturally chic hair that’s healthy and beautiful.

For a classic beauty, a trend of relaxed elegance was showcased with clean, shiny, soft hair that looked healthy and delicate. Whether thick, luscious and tousled, or sleek and ‘glamazonian’, this look is ideal for longer styles and exudes super-sexy, elegant femininity.

As seen at:

• CHARLIE BROWN • JETS • SASS & BIDE • GORMAN • 5TH AMENDMENT • LEONA EDMINSTON PINS • HOLEPROOF ANTZ PANTZ • LOVEABLE • BONDS • MOSSIMO • PLATINUM • VOODOO • RAZZAMATAZZ •CRYSTELLE • BERLEI

Tips:

To achieve the effortlessly elegant waves as seen at Gorman, apply Redken Spray Starch 15, heat memory styler to freshly blow dried hair. Once it has dried, section the hair into one inch pieces and curl using a curling iron.

The tip is to curl each strand from the base, winding sections of hair around the tongs and leaving the ends out. Spray Redken Vinyl Glam 02 mega shine spray to create a high shine finish.

For super sleek and flowing hair as seen at Charlie Brown, centre part towel dried hair and apply Redken Satinwear 02 ultimate blow dry lotion. Apply Redken Glass 01 smoothing serum to the ends of damp hair and massage in well. Blow dry hair smooth with a large sized radial brush, making sure to pull the brush through the ends of the hair as you go. This will ensure the hair flows freely at the ends. You may also wish to smooth the top layer down using hot irons, combing through the ends as you go.

Dishevelled structure

Lisa Ho

A bold new take on feminine shapes.

Volume is a big trend for Spring/Summer and it takes on a slightly more dishevelled beehive-inspired structure. Rather than sleek and tight, deconstruct your up-do to sit loose on the head in a nest-like shape with plenty of disheveled volume. The look is still feminine and soft, with a next-day “un-done” feel.

As seen at:

• LISA HO •EASTON PEARSON •NEVENKA •DAVID LAWRENCE • HOTEL BONDI •CAMILLA •FLAMINGO SANDS • SHAKUHACHI • BETTINA LIANO • ANTONIA PARIS • RUBY & ROSE • VALERIE TOLOSA • ALEX PERRY

Tips:

To create a more relaxed, dishevelled structure for your up-style or bun, apply a volumizing foam like Redken Touch Control 05 volumizing texture whip to the roots. With your hair flipped upside down, blast dry to emphasize maximum volume at the roots.

Flip your hair back over and begin teasing each section from the top of your hair, clamping each section with a straightening iron as you go, then spray with Redken Quickday 18 instant finishing spray and brush it out gently. This will create maximum texture and volume for you to work with. To strengthen the hair, apply Redken 8 wool shake and loosely throw hair up onto the crown, tying it loosely into a bun at the top.

Abstract shape

New Guarde

Experimental up-dos for for a modern edge.

Exploring more inventive, abstract structure, trends of hybrid up-dos combined fish-tails and buns. Varied parting across the head and organic textures with smooth and sleek contrasting fuzzy, rough texture. Pull hair forward to highlight the fringe area and create an entirely new profile.

As seen at:

• ANTIPODIUM • CAMILLA & MARC • GARY BIGENI • ILLIONAIRE • KARLA SPETIC • KIRRILY JOHNSTON • LIFE WITH BIRD • S&B VIE • MARNIE SKILLINGS • ONE TEASPOON • GAIL SORRONDA • DHINI • JESSIE HILL • DANIEL AVAKIAN

Tips:

For all textured and structured up-do’s, it’s important to apply a base into the hair to enhance hold and texture. Apply Redken Touch Control 05 volumizing texture whip and blow dry loosely before creating your up-style.

For a matte or messy bun-shape that lasts, use a ponytail as your base and on dry hair, apply Redken 8 Wool Shake. Backcomb the tail lightly and twist it around the base loosely. For a more abstract profile, experiment with your parting.

For smooth frizz-free shapes or for high shine, apply Redken Vinyl Glam 02 mega shine spray. Try patting the hair with your hand as you spray for enhanced shine.

It is important that your up-style lasts so always finish with spray of Redken quick Dry 18 instant finishing spray.

Texture explosion

RAFW in review #5

Maximum volume was a key trend of the season. For a more rock n’ roll texture, maximize airiness with “fluffed-out” exaggerated volume. The catwalk saw an explosion of texture, wispy ends and floaty, voluminous body. This volume can be incredibly chic. Wear it with jeans and a singlet, or pair it back with a sleek short dress.

As seen at:

• ANNA THOMAS • BEC & BRIDGE • GINGER & SMART • KATE SYLVESTER • MAD CORTES • MELANIE CUTFIELD • NICOLA FINETTI • WAYNE COOPER • COHEN ET SABINE • JAYSON BRUNSDON • MANNING CARTELL • RUBY SMALL BONE • SILENCE IS GOLDEN • THURLEY

Tips:

To create the iconic, voluminous airy texture with maximum volume, first apply Redken Spray Starch 15 heat memory styler to the lengths of dry hair.

You can crimp the hair section by section or use a small curling iron to achieve a slightly varied effect. Vary this look again by first pulling the hair back into a pony tail, crimping only the tail section to emphasise volume in the tail.

Once you’ve set the hair and it has cooled, spray on a last spritz of Redken Workforce 09 flexible volumizing spray and brush it out lightly.

Finish with a light spray of Redken 8 Wool Shake and fluff the hair up and out, using your hands.
