Session styling tips: Nicolas Jurnjack

Starting out as a session stylist? Follow these tips from international hairdressing guru Nicolas Jurnjack

WORDS: VICTORIA MEPPEM 1 MAY 2008

First, look at every single fashion magazine. Look at the hair and try to understand how it’s been done. Even if you haven’t got the mathematics in your mind yet, it doesn’t matter. If you ask yourself the question, your brain is going to find out the answer at some point.

Try to take the best look that you’ve seen and repeat it in the salon.

You’ve got to be an innovator not a follower. Be careful not to slavishly follow what you see in the magazines but at the same time get inspired by what you see. Remember the magazines have been shot three to four months before, and sometimes next season the look will have changed. By the time you get there the trend is already out.

Work hard. The industry looks very, very glamorous but it is exhausting. You’ve got to work a lot – a lot – around your plastic heads or models at night.

At the start, create your own identity. You need to find which kind of family of work attracts you the most; if it’s extreme, if it’s glam, if it’s quiet, if it’s big volume. Find where you belong and then all the other categories will develop along the way. And then you have to work that category, to explore it, and from there slowly, unconsciously, you’ll change and move on. Be the best at that one category and then you’ll be able to do everything.
