The Right Do For You
By Naomi Jackson February 5 2009

A good haircut is the abracadabra of any makeover: a simple snip can improve your look by highlighting your favourite features and minimising any imperfections. But how do you find the best style? Simply identify your face shape and use these star styles for inspiration.

Angelina Jolie
SQUARE FACE

ANGELINA JOLIE, JESSICA BIEL, NICOLE RICHIE

Women with square faces look especially good with centre parts and medium length to long, face-framing layers which soften the corners at the top and bottom of the face. Be sure to avoid blunt-cut fringes, which can square the face even more.

Victoria Beckham
LONG FACE

SARAH JESSICA PARKER, VICTORIA BECKHAM, LIV TYLER

To flatter an oblong face, avoid volume on the top of the head; it will make your face look narrower. Keep hair on the crown smooth and add a fringe (blunt or side-swept) or shaggy layers that hit at nose level to create the illusion of a wider face.

Reese Witherspoon
HEART FACE

REESE WITHERSPOON, SCARLETT JOHANSSON, MAGGIE GYLLENHAAL

Counterbalance a small, pointy chin by focussing volume and layers at chin level so the space around the chin is filled. Subtle layers, a side-swept fringe and piecey cuts are flattering but steer clear of blunt-cut bobs or box-shaped cuts.

Cameron Diaz
ROUND FACE

KIRSTEN DUNST, DEBRA MESSING, CAMERON DIAZ

Short styles and fringes only accentuate roundness. Instead, have layers cut so the ends hit at cheek level or below to help cover some of the width and draw focus away from the cheeks. Add height on top to elongate your face.

Eva Longoria
OVAL FACE

HALLE BERRY, CHARLIZE THERON, EVA LONGORIA

This face shape, where the centre of the face is the widest point, is the most versatile. Decide which feature you want to emphasize and cut your hair accordingly: For instance, to play up your eyes, try a thick, blunt fringe that hits right at your brows.
