3. Play with a fringe
If
you’re happy to GHD every day then a full-on fringe can work wonders,
breaking up some of that heavy mass. If not, remember these three
words: sweep it sideways! A sideways fringe takes away emphasis from
the rest of your hair and plants it firmly o your face.
4. Love thy texture
As
with any hair type, the standard rule applies: work with what you’ve
got! If you have a natural wave, try layers and some nice moisturising
protectant or mousse to bring out shape and curl. If you’re dead
straight, make friends with your GHD and channel Demi Moore and
Collette Dinnigan till the cows come home.
5. Sweep it up!
If
you’ve been watching the 2008 New York and Paris catwalks you know that
the Up Do is back and it’s big. A little bit of volume on the top of
the hair works wonders and is totally in vogue right now, so try an
upswept pony tail with volume at the roots or a carefree bun at the
top, mid or base of your head. Try a root boost gel, mousse, hair spray
or shampoo. Reluctant to put it all up? Go for a partial Up Do; just
the top of your hair with the rest falling loosely behind. Any which
way, there’s little more beautiful than a woman’s neck so show it off,
as poetry upon poetry attests!
6. Cut back conditioner
With
thick hair it’s generally fine to shampoo daily although, as with all
hair types, every second or third day is better. But a hot tip is to
stay away from conditioning your roots… just lather the conditioner
onto mid long sections of your hair. This will avoid grease and the
need to endlessly shampoo, and keep your hair in much healthier
condition.
7. Remember to LWYH...
That
means Love What You Have! If there’s a wave, try either layers or a
chunky textursing product to encourage curl. If it’s staright, make
friends with your GHD and commit to a fringe or no-fringe Demi option.
if it’s medium, consider a fringe, tapered tips or a wave. And it’s
short, live and love your bounce!
PLUS... TIPS FROM THE 2008 AHFA WINNERS
“Thick
hair can lose lustre and become frizzy quite quickly,” says AHFA 2008
Stylist of the Year winner, Anthony Nader of Raw Anthony Nader in
Darlinghurst, Sydney.
“Look for hydrating products that add
sheen and polish. Cuts with solid texture that add longer layers,
especially around the base, work best. Ballayage (free-hand colour) is
perfect for thicker hair.”
“It’s definitely all about the
right product,” adds Paula Kelly from Sublime Salons, Brisbane, winner
of the AHFA QLD Hairdresser of the Year award. “Finding a product that
will de-fatten hair and create shape is important. We also need to
focus on the right styling tools to smooth the cuticle down. Moisture
and shine products will create a polished look.”
