Just a few years ago hair extensions ricocheted randomly between the world of the super-flash and the super-trash. Now celebrity endorsement and a market explosion have put hair extensions firmly on the high street fashion map. But how do they work, are they safe and which ones are best, anyway?
A simple way to view extensions is to ask yourself do you want them just for a fun night out or do you want them in every day for the next six months? Victoria Lea tracked down two industry experts for the no-nonsense lowdown on hair’s new lengths.

When do you advise clients try a Hairdo extension?
For an event! Hairdo extensions are great for everyday life when you need a confidence boost or just want to feel that little bit extra special. Nothing beats a fantastic ’do for a function – perfect if you’re growing out your hair and in an awkward ‘in between’ phase too.
Can Hairdo be used at homes or just in salons?
Hairdo can be used anywhere! It’s that simple to attach. Every woman can have access to fuller or lustrous hair. I recommend you make an appointment with your hair stylist for the initial fitting which simply involves:
• Sectioning out the top half of your hair and pinning out of the way • Attaching the Hairdo following the simple instructions • Take out the top section – and you’re done!
What care and maintenance is involved?
For any temporary hair extensions including Hairdo it’s important to use a cleansing system specifically designed for it. Xtension Moisturinsing Shampoo and Xtension Leave-in Conditioner & Detangler are formulated for use on synthetic and human hair extensions. To wash, begin by combing out your temporary piece, place in cold water with your cleanser and gently swish. To dry blot with a towel (never brush, comb, wring or twist when the extension is wet) and then lay flat. Style when it’s completely dry.
For permanent extensions simply wash and dry as you would your normal hair! I recommend a shampoo and conditioner for dry hair to give plenty of moisture, and treating your hair gently by combing with a wide tooth comb from ends to roots.
Are more Australians trying hair extensions these days?
Yes and no. The Mischas and Britneys have given this look a bad name with some very tragic applications of extensions and shoddy maintenance. But thanks to some of the beautiful hair in the media it has also raised the profile of extensions and more and more people are talking about it and trying them on – with fantastic results.
What’s the secret to great hair extensions?
The secret to great extensions is for them not to look like extensions!
