Expo hair: Conversations
Yes, the catwalks were running wild but so were the aisles of Expo, literally packed with hot street hair. MHS tracked down a few for the insider story on colour, dreads and more colour.

Both used Goldwell Elumen to get their colour.

You both have really unusual colours. What’s the story behind them?

Laura: I shaved my head for the Great Shave. I shaved heads for two and a half hours and at the end I said, ‘Whoever hasn’t put in money, put in your money now and I’ll shave my head.’

Why this colour? I think pastels are beautiful. I’ve been white before but it fades really quickly and I also wanted something different – I feel too much like a ‘blonde’ when I’m blonde. Plus, I have a yellow-based skin so cooler colours always look better on me – I can’t wear warmer colours like yellow.

We play with our hair a lot, it’s fun. I love playing with my hair to get a better understanding of colour.

Kate: I love this colour. I went green maybe three years ago but haven’t done it since – green’s the only colour I hadn’t down twice so I thought I’d give it a go! Anyway, I have red in my skin so green helps counteract that; it makes my skin look clearer.

Being green you do get a few extra stares, and every now and again you wonder if there’s something on your shirt or something, the way everyone keeps looking at you. But it’s surprising how many people say, ‘Cool hair!’ – even older clients – and that they like this shade of green.

Upcoming trends you see for summer?

Kate: Fringes and fuller fringes – more people are definitely asking for that.

Laura: Chocolate brown – I’ve had so many requests for that, and also for fringes. Fringes are massive.
