Hat season kicks off
By Lis Szepsy October 20 2008

In their relentless search for ways to adorn the fashion die-hard, designers have made the hat a necessary accessory this summer. In every possible permutation, it's less about sun protection and every bit about eye candy. And with the Melbourne Cup looming large, myhairdressersearch thought it was time to review how to do hair with hats.

Rule 1 - You can't go wrong with a 'clean' head, i.e. pulling the hair back from the face and lacquering it to give a great shine. You can still add volume behind the ears, either straight or full with frizz, coils or curls.

Rule 2 - Excess is NOT a dirty word. Remember you can add soft head wraps and head bands under hats, as well as trimming the hair with clips.

Rule 3 - The idiot proof option that will work no matter what the occasion - a plait, pony tail or bun. For a seasonal update, try the 'flip' or looped under pony tail, some vibrant colour added to the hair or a funked up textured and sculptured bun.

Rule 4 - If the hair is going to be out and long, it must look clean and shiny. Try John Frieda Frizz-Ease Daily Nourish Leave-In Fortifying Spray for a necessary touch of radiance and control.

Rule 5 - If you're going to enter the dangerous territory of visors and caps, keep hair sleek. You don't want to end up looking like an extra from Kath and Kim.
