By Rob Kotevski
February 25 2009
With the world in the grip of a crippling economic downturn, the mood at New York’s Autumn/Winter fashion collections was solemn and scaled back.
Week-long fashion collections around the world are normally renowned for holding hedonistic and decadent parties and New Yorkers party just as hard as their European counterparts, but with many Americans losing their jobs and homes, the thought of traditional over-the-top celebrations left many with a bad taste in their mouth.
Many designers opted out of runway shows and presented their work in less expensive and smaller arrangements.
The Australian contingent at New York Fashion Week was represented by Melbourne boys Michael Angel and Toni Maticevski.
Some of the Big Apple’s leading designers are teaming up with Aveda to raise “green” awareness in the fashion industry.
Fashion designers Rodarte, 3.1 Phillip Lim and Christian Siriano have committed to reducing the environmental impact of their shows.
This team of environmentally aware designers have pledged to replace backstage bottled water with New York tap water, eliminate fur, print all show invitations and programs on recycled paper, serve organic locally-sourced food backstage provided by Aveda and also fully support the
I Catwalk for Water
campaign.
During the shows, guests had the opportunity to sponsor fashion models in the first-ever “cat-walkathon” in honour of clean water rights. Sponsored models chose from four local and global organisations working to preserve clean water: Global Greengrants Fund, The Surfrider Foundation (CA), Clean Ocean Action (NY), and the National Resource Defense Council (NRDC).

Odile Gilbert for Aveda
Aveda Lead:
Dennis Clendennen, Dionysus, The Woodlands, Texas
The Look:
“A modern, architectural look, the hair is slicked back with a deep side part. A ponytail is laced up and wrapped to create an architectural, modern version of a chignon.”
Get the look
Step 1:
The show was divided by hair color: blonde, red or black.
Step 2:
Apply Aveda Smooth Infusion Style-Prep Smoother and blow dry to create smooth, shiny, straight hair.
Step 3:
Create a low side part on the right side and draw the part across the head, behind the top of the ear, leaving the front panel of hair, from part to ear, free. Spray with Aveda Air Control Hair Spray and comb through using a fine tooth comb.
Step 4:
Pull hair back tightly into a low slung ponytail, slightly off center to the left.
Step 5:
Take the remaining front panel of hair and smooth back into the same pony to create a sleek, tight look. Spray with Aveda Air Control Hair Spray to minimize flyaways, maintain the look and add shine.
Step 6:
Prep the ponytail with Aveda Smooth Infusion Style-Prep Smoother. Secure an elastic string (same color as hair) at the base of the pony and wrap the string down the length of the tail, criss-crossing in front and back, mimicking the wrapping of the collection’s boot strappings. At the bottom of hair, wrap the elastic string back up the pony and tie in place. Cut excess string.
Step 7:
Wrap the bound ponytail into an architectural, square-shaped chignon on the left side of the head. Secure in place with hair pins and spray again with Aveda Air Control Hair Spray.
Odile Gilbert says, “I wanted to create something wearable but unique for the modern girl. The shapes are simple but the texture is complex. Like the collection, which plays with fabric and texture, the hair is sleek in front with an architectural, modern chignon in back.”
