New York Fashion Week Spring 09
By Lis Szepsy September 19 2009

Diane von Furstenburg

While New York designers have never been celebrated for their innovation, they are without doubt leaders in modern and wearable fashion. The hair on the runways this season reflected this pattern, with nothing radical or too tricky anywhere, rather an echo of former trends being refined. Many designers chose to show long hair out and glossed.

Donna Karan did it with the occasional loose curl at the ends, while Matthew Williamson showed hair strictly parted then folded over the shoulders. At Proenza Schouler, a dramatic wave cascaded down one side. More interestingly, Diane von Furstenburg used flowered garlands that led into drops of ribbons and feathers. Zac Posen featured a heavily greased quiff to lead into layers of pinned back and fluffed hair that formed a veil down the back and shoulders.

The ponytail and plait reappeared, with Calvin Klein and Max Azria doing artful twists and flips at the back of the head, and Marc Jacobs and Marc by Marc Jacobs showing scruffy tails under hats and doubled school girl head bands.

And the bun took a new interesting turn. At Carolina Herrera, a twist that started at the front hairline continued right around the head til it led into a folded chignon at the back. At Malandrino, it sat like a pastry on top of the head, while at Narcisso Rodriguez and Vivienne Tam, the bun was an extended rope of hair, pinned and puffed for extra drama.

At Oscar de la Renta, the recurring quiff gave a touch of funk factor to a chignon that stretched from the crown to the nape of the neck.

So yet again, no news was good news, with these laid back styles looking relaxed and achievable, and decidedly New York.
