Planet Organic
The non-ammonia, non-peroxide Atlantis Watercolour line. By Shonagh Walker 15 August 2008

There’s a shift in hairdressing towards organic hair care, styling products and yes, even colouring.

myhairdressersearch speaks to those leading the trend.

Five years ago, Alan Buki and Jose Bryce-Smith, sat in their Sydney salon, Atlantis Hair, mulling over the lack of ammonia-free products available to create a beautifully clean blonde, a stunningly shining brunette or a traffic-stopping red, not just in-salon, but on consumer retail shelves.

It was a light bulb moment for the couple, that would see their business burgeon from a small-but-busy salon, to a complete production and distribution line of organic hair products, which includes the Atlantis Watercolour range, a line of complete ammonia-free hair colours, and the O&M organic hair care and styling range, available both in salon and on the shelves in leading health food stores (call: 1300 724 635 www.originalmineral.com).

“We realised that people are far more aware of chemicals and how they can be related to minor irritations and disease,” says Bryce-Smith. “We’ve done so much research and we know that there is such huge advancement in organic and natural hair care, that you can easily achieve the same results without the harsh chemicals.”

“We are focused on producing salon-quality, natural products. We focus on unique custom packaging and branding, whilst taking an alternative direction in ingredients. Atlantis and O&M are committed to researching ways of substituting harsh chemicals, while adding the many benefits that quality botanicals and essential oils have to offer.”

Kaye Giorgiadis from Eco Hair Products couldn’t agree more (call 1300 557 517). “Consumers know the facts. Ammonia is a hazardous chemical that can be harmful to your health.”

As a result, Eco developed an ethos that was committed to environment, education and ethics. “Our goal is to provide hairdressers with professional and retail products that ensure their growth and success,” says Giorgiadis, whose extensive ranges (including CHI hair care and styling tools and products, Biosilk hair care and styling products and Arum hair care) are available throughout salons Australia-wide.

“Eco Hair Products offers a new and innovative approach to hairdressing with safer options for you, your staff and also your clientele.”

Hailing from Colorado, USA, MOP (Modern Organic Products) has been around pretty much since the dawn of organics, and enjoys huge success world-wide (call 1800 104 204), proving that organics are every bit as effective as other product formulas, and setting the standard for other successful emerging ranges.

“We believe in natural hairdressing without sacrificing performance,” says Megan Cantrell, Media Relations, and Brandi Goode, Marketing Associate from MOP HQ in Denver. “The certified organic extracts that we source from each formula enhance and support the benefit provided by each product. We are bringing together modern and organic, nature and technology.”

And what about shelf life?

“At MOP we guarantee our formulations have a minimum shelf life of one year and we avoid parabens where possible, only including them in formulas where a more natural preservative solution isn’t available to achieve our minimum shelf life expectations.”

Bryce-Smith concurs, “The shelf life of an organic product should be the same as any other. We’re also aware that what you use in the shower washes down the drain and ultimately into the oceans and environment. So we ensure our ingredients create as little harm to our world as is possible, which includes 100% recyclable packaging. “

If that’s not enough to amp up your social conscience, none of the ranges from these manufacturers are tested on animals, or use ingredients that have been animal-tested. And doesn’t that make you feel good?
