Martin Place, in the heart of Sydney’s CBD, is the hub of the city’s financial and political spheres. NSW Parliament is a short walk away, and many of the country’s top financial companies have a sizeable chunk of nearby real estate. The hustle and bustle of Martin Place is normally filled with many suits, politicians and lawyers.

All that was set to change, however, for one week in August when the best of Australia’s fashion and beauty industries gathered at Martin Place to celebrate Rosemount Sydney Fashion Festival.

The biggest names in Australian fashion flocked to Martin Place’s staged area, built specially for Rosemount Sydney Fashion Festival. Alex Perry, Camilla and Marc, sass and bide and Project Runway judge Jayson Brunsdon were just some of the names that showcased their work at one of Australia’s biggest fashion events.

Over the course of six days, the lucky members of the audience witnessed some of the finest in hair and fashion.

Monday

For the opening show, hair at Jayson Brunsdon was all about natural, sweeping beauty. “There was an emphasis on a carefree appearance, an extremely simple yet beautiful look with slight ruffled texture to create that natural wind swept look,” says hair director Philip Barwick for Redken.

The hair incorporated soft and feminine styling features with a low, elegant chignon tied in a rosette style at the very nape of the neck whilst exposing the neck line. Hair was parted to the side or in the middle, depending what was natural for each model.

1. For loose, yet controlled texture, spray Redken Fabricate 03 onto clean damp hair and use your fingers instead of a brush, to blow dry. Once dry, apply another layer of Redken Fabricate 03.

2. Find the natural parting of the hair and gently rake the hair back using your hands, into a very low-set ponytail at the nape.

3. Take a thin strand from the ponytail to wrap around the elastic and conceal it. Then loosely twist the ponytail clockwise in a circular motion until the hair is wound all the way up. Pin and secure the bun as you twist. The look should not be tight or firm, but more like a flower in full bloom.

4. Finish by applying Redken Workforce 09 and use your fingers to rake the hair through for more texture through the sides.

Tuesday

Hair at the Seafolly show was all about relaxed beach-chic.

“I wanted to create hair that was more like sexy beach hair rather than hair that looks too disheveled. The look is more glamorous as well as being versatile and low maintenance. You could wear this look on the streets of New York to the beaches on the Sunshine Coast – it’s easy and sexy,” says Carl Reeves, hair director for Redken. Hair was parted in the middle with cascading, bouncy waves framing the face and resting on the shoulders.

1. Spray Redken For Men Bulk Up Spray on dry hair at the roots, lengths and ends.

2. Starting at the front of the head, take large random sections of hair and using curling tongs, vertically tong each section, wrapping the hair around tong away from the face.

3. Leave hair to cool and set.

4. Spray Redken Urban Experiment 8 Wool Shake into hands or lightly spray over the entire hair. Use you hands to rough up and build volume and gently break up curls in the lengths and at the roots until the desired texture is achieved.

Wednesday

Alice in Wonderland’s Mad Hatters Tea Party and the colours of summer were the inspiration behind the hair look at the RAFW Review #2 show. The creative up-do involved the hair being separated into three ponytails, each twisted and secured in place. The overall look was kept smooth with soft edges and fly-away pieces framing the face at the front.

1. Start by applying Redken Blown Away 09 to damp. Leave out a 1cm band from the hairline to create a softer look around the face. Separate the remaining hair into three ponytails.

2. Starting at the bottom, make the first pony between the occipital bone and the nape. The second ponytail between the occipital bone and the crown and the third directly on the crown.

3. Apply another small amount of Redken Blown Away 09 to the lengths of each ponytail, then roll and twist lengths to create smooth rosettes. Pin to secure.

4. Once all three rosettes are secured, spray hair with a light mist of Redken Quick Dry 18.

5. To complete this look as it was on the runway, you can finish by spraying a small amount of coloured hair spray in the centre of each rosette.

To give the look a strong classic reference to the 1940’s era, hair adopted the iconic finger-wave technique for the Diet Coke Little Black Dress show.

“Every woman is beautiful in their own unique way,” explains hair director for Redken, Alex Grahl. “Each dress was unique so the hair needed to reference both the designer and the dress. We wanted to work with each models’ hair a little differently to enhance their complete look. This is a great example of styling that many girls can mimic at home.”

1. Isolate a large section of hair from each recession point (top of forehead) to the crown and pin out of the way. Apply Redken For Men Stand Tough Extreme Gel to remainder of hair and slick back into a bun over the right ear. Pin to secure.

2. Spray front section with Redken Forceful 23 and tong in a diagonal direction, pinning curls to the head to set them.

3. Once all sections have been pinned to the scalp, allow to cool before releasing them. Gently brush out the curl whilst smoothing with a hair dryer set to low.

4. Finish with a spritz of Redken Vinyl Glam 02 and Redklen Forceful 23.

Thursday

The RAFW Review #3 show required hair to look as innovative, multi-textured and visually appealing as the clothes they accompanied. Hair director for Redken 5th Avenue NYC, Todd Arndt developed more than the typical bun-shape for this show with his progressive take on modern-day knots.

“A reconstructed fish-braid makes this look effortless and effective,” explains Todd. “The look for the girls was sleek and super feminine with an edge. With the guys we kept the look cool and masculine whilst experimenting with the direction and individual lengths.”

1. Apply Redken Blown Away 09 to the roots of towel-dried hair and blow dry in, encouraging the hair in a forward direction toward where you want the bun to eventually sit.

2. Once hair is dry, sweep it forward and secure into a firm ponytail at the top of the forehead above the centre of right eyebrow.

3. Create a fishtail braid in the ponytail, keeping it loose and carefree - you won’t need to be neat here. Enhance the rawness of this look by messing up the braid, then roll the braid into a bun shape and secure with pins.

4. Finish this look by spraying Redken Vinyl Glam 02 to the back and sides, smoothing with your hands to enhance the shine. Use Redken Workforce 09 to secure the bun.

Saturday

The decisively seductive style at the RAFW Review #5 show showcased hair that demonstrated the strength and elegance of today’s modern woman.

Lorna Evans, hair director for Redken explains, “We wanted the hair to have a masculine effect in the front with a of a strong, slick side part and contrast that with a super-feminine textured chignon at the back. A woman who wears her hair like this is strong and confident - a force to be reckoned with!”

1. Apply a small amount of Redken Blown Away 09 to towel-dried hair and part the hair with a comb into a defined and dramatic side part. The part should begin from a point at the hairline from the centre of your left eyebrow and travels back to the crown in a diagonal direction. Blow-dry the hair, keeping the shape of the parting in place.

2. Mix a combination of Redken Outshine 01 and Redken Elastic Works 09 through your hands and slick through the top sections of the hair to create the sleek, shiny finish in the parting.

3. Smooth the hair down as though you’re going to pull it into a low pony but instead, secure the hair down across the nape with strong pins.

4. Back comb the ‘tail’ section until you’ve crup the hair and pin into a chignon shape.
