Wedding hair ... Ellen Degeneres and Portia di Rossi.
Ellen Degeneres and Portia di Rossi.

A long time ago, in a land far, far away, there once lived a girl called Diana Spencer. Lots of people said she was very pretty as she was tall with blond hair and loved sports. Women around the world would soon look to Diana as their guide when it came to fashion, make-up and hair. She met a man called Charles and they began dating.

Soon after, Charles thought it would be a wonderful idea if they got married. He did a little shopping around and bought a ring he thought she would like. He proposed to her with a £30,000 ring the size of an ashtray that had 14 diamonds and a sapphire in it. Diana said yes on the spot.

Their little wedding was only watched by about 750 million of their closest friends around the world as someone decided to call the media and tell them about it. Her wedding dress cost a measly £9,000. They had to move in with his parents when they were married so Diana had to live with the in-laws from hell.

Even though Charles and Diana didn’t live happily ever after and their fairytale had a sad ending, brides-to-be all around the world haven’t stopped looking to celebrities and public figures for inspiration for their own hair and make-up on the big day.

There’s something very exciting about a celebrity wedding. Celebs will usually have an almost unlimited budget and access to some of the world’s best fashion designers, hair stylists and make-up artists. And if they don’t, they’ll think of a way to come up with the money. Even when they’re not short of a quid or two.

Through a series of diabolical business deals, for his third wedding to Slovenian model Melania Knauss, Donald Trump managed to offset the cost of the engagement ring, among other things. Chefs and florists offered to provide their services at a heavily discounted rate in exchange for publicity generated from the wedding.

Who can forget reading about the wedding of soccer star David Beckham to former Spice Girl Posh? Taking the art of rich white trash and no taste to an all new high (or low), the couple sat on golden thrones as they celebrated their big day. On the other side of the scale, actress Renee Zellweger decided to marry country singer Kenny Chesney at the beach without a throne in sight.

Earlier this month, Black Eyed Peas alumni and now solo pop star Stacy “Fergie” Ferguson wed Las Vegas actor Josh Duhamel in a $1 million ceremony in Malibu. Wearing a Dolce and Gabbana dress paired with Jimmy Choo shoes, the bride’s hair had a centre part, and she wore it half pulled-up, allowing her locks to fall with a soft, natural wave.

In one of the most high-profile weddings of recent times, Australian actress Portia di Rossi married her long-time partner, American talk show host Ellen Degeneres. Portia donned a Zac Posen gown with her hair pulled in a soft updo.

Of course, you could always take a leaf out of folk singer Jewel’s book and just bypass the engagement period and head straight to the wedding aisle. Jewel wed rodeo champion Ty Murray in a simple white gown and allowed her long blonde locks to fall naturally with nice soft curls.

Let’s hope these guys live happily ever after.
