The hair industry has often been described as fast and furious. What’s happening in hair and beauty can be an influence, and is influenced by, the world of fashion. People look to hair to see what’s current, what’s happening and what is just around the corner.
Speaking at the Goldwell Trend Directions Seminar, Ruth Marhsall-Johnson, Think Tank Senior Editor at creative intelligence agency WGSN, traveled to Sydney from London specially for the event. She led a select team of hairdressers and hair media through trends for this winter and beyond.
Key trends in hair |
Height
This look makes a strong statement that can be filled with attitude. A way for fashionistas to express their creativity through their hair. Think Lady Gaga on Rove Live. The fashion worn must work with it and not clash with the high hair on top. Opt for a narrow, long and almost column-like silhouette. |

Contrast and texture
Wet and dry hair will be seen in
the same do. Plaited and teased, smooth and frizzy or straight at the
top and curly at the bottom are just a some of the combinations that
will be popular.
|
Moulded
Sculpted hair that feels organic and fluid. Hair is folded and twisted into rolls. Modern interpretations of the quiff and the chignon. Lots of knots and buns will be seen. Cicrular shapes will be a major influence, coming from strong geometric shapes. |

Wispy and flyaway
Think soft and romantic. Almost resembles a cloud or a nest. Lots of air through the slightly messy look. A soft and floaty dress will accompany this look perfectly. Tip for stylists: some hairdressers have rubbed a balloon across the hair for some strands to come loose through the static. |
